Its a Classic
Ben completed the classic marathon stage in 4 hours 21 minutes.
Of the 727 competitors who set off at the usual 9:15 a.m. start time, Ben was the 80th to finish. This put him in overall 134th position.
The stage was dedicated to the French competitor, Bernard Julé, who died on Thursday. Some competitors made makeshift black armbands out of plastic bags.
The terrain ensured this was a challenging route. Competitors had to cross two very uneven rived beds, flat stony plateau and 3 Km of dunes.
300 competitors crossed the stage finish line by 3 p.m. when the temperature was at 42 degrees. Two competitors got lost after the third checkpoint when they mistook a tourist camp for the bivouac.
For the last ‘magical’ night in the desert the competitors were treated to a classical music concert, performed under the stars by Opera de Paris.
