Ups and Downs
Ben continues to do well three days into the race. He finished the third stage in position 134 (12th British competitor) which puts him 144th position overal (13th British).
Stage three was slightly shorter that the previous stage. 749 competitors set off at 9.05 a.m. following the group photograph (above). The day started sunny with a light breeze and temperature of 22.7 degrees. By 2 p.m. it was 47 degrees in the bivouac at the end of the route.
The route took the Ben and the others though gorges, across salt flats and stony terrain. A rocky footpath led led them through a passage in Jebel Zireg. A series of climbs and descents over sandy hilly areas were also tackled.
Rains in December transformed the desert into a festival of colourful grasses and flowers. This benefited the competitors because conditions were less arid that for the this stage in last year’s race On that occasion, the same route was used but followed in the opposite direction.
Unfortunately three people had problems with their feet during the day and voluntarily dropped out.
The Long Stage
Stage 4 is the ‘classic’ or long stage of the MARATHON DES SABLES : 70.5km, run during part of the night for everyone and over two days for some. Love it or hate it, this is often he most decisive stage of the MdS.
Before leaving, Ben said he was determined not to take two days because he wanted a rest day.
