The Marathon Des Sables

The Marathon des Sables (Marathon of the Sands) is an International Ultra Marathon Endurance Race, accepted as the "Toughest Foot Race in The World". Run each year in the Sahara Desert in Southern Morocco, the actual course and length of each stage is only released one day before the start of the race.

The distance covered will be about 234 km / 151 miles, (made up of legs of 25, 34, 38, 82, 42, 22 km) run over six days (seven for some) which is equivalent to five and a half regular marathons.

Most people enter and train for this race over a year in advance and indeed the 2008 race is already full.  I was lucky enough to somehow gain entry as late as November 2006.  Fate smiled on me then and hopefully I'll continue in that vain of luck for the race.

As well as running in the crushing heat, over sand dunes and stony plains competitors have to carry everything they will need for the race on their backs in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag etc) weighing around 15kg.
